Tolkien's iconic literary works to the screen, using Rotoscope, an old, labor intensive animation process which involves tracing over live-action footage, frame by frame, in order to recreate an animated sequence. Utilizing a unique combination of traditional animation and rotoscoping techniques, Bakshi's film captured the imagination of audiences worldwide, offering a visually striking interpretation of the epic tale. The film was originally intended to be released as part one with part two to round out the tale. Financial challenges required the producers to scrap plans for the second film and condense the vast narrative of the three books into a single feature. Neverthless The Lord of the Rings, directed by Ralph Bakshi,introduced many viewers to Middle-earth for the first time, including the young Peter Jackson; and laid the groundwork for future adaptations.
