Location Based Experiences
In 1998, Peter Jackson's team scoured the New Zealand landscape for the perfect setting for Hobbiton™, the idyllic home of Tolkien's Hobbits. They stumbled upon the Alexander's sprawling sheep farm in Waikato, where the rolling hills and lush pastures bore a striking resemblance to descriptions of The Shire in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books. Building Bag End to perch atop a hill overlooking a freshly planted Party Tree beside a tranquil lake, the farm's natural beauty provided the ideal canvas for Jackson's vision of Middle-earth. Over the following months, with the help of the New Zealand Army, Hobbit Holes were meticulously crafted, and filming commenced in December 1999. Despite initial plans for demolition, the set attracted visitors and soon, evolved into a beloved tourist attraction, with guided tours of Hobbiton Movie Set starting in 2002. Peter Jackson's returned to Middle-earth to direct The Hobbit film trilogy in 2009, instigated the creation of 44 permanent Hobbit Holes and The Green Dragon Inn, providing visitors with an immersive experience complete with beer and ciders inspired by the books. Today, Hobbiton Movie Set stands as a testament to fans of the books and films enduring desire to immerse themselves in the magic of Middle-earth.
